Mitchell Elementary Appreciates our Counselor, Ms. Farrell!
February 3rd-7th is National School Counseling Week and our school is recognizing our counselor.
What inspired you to become a school counselor? What do you love most about your role in a school?
My dad was a PE teacher and I always loved visiting him at work so I always knew I wanted to work in education, but couldn't decide what I wanted to teach. In high school, I took some classes in psychology and was fascinated by the subject. I loved learning about personalities and social-emotional development/skills. I decided to major in psychology in college, but still wanted to work in education. Becoming a school counselor combined my passion and interests! I found a job that I absolutely love!
How do you support students in achieving their academic, personal and college/career goals?
As a school counselor, there are many ways I support students, families, and the school achieve goals! I assist many of the building leadership initiatives by attending meetings and working directly with students and parents. I also assist with positive incentives and celebrations. My favorite way to support school and student growth is working directly with students and families. I spend time building relationships to get to know all of the students at Mitchell so they know they have an advocate in their corner.
What encouragement do you want to offer students and families to help them succeed?
Since I’ve been at Mitchell, I have been so grateful to see so much growth and progress. Our families have really stepped up to support all of our school goals and collaborate with staff. It is amazing to see what we can achieve when we work together.
Thank you Ms. Farrell for everything you do here at Mitchell!
