About Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc
On Friday evening, November 17, 1911 (On the campus of Howard University)…three undergraduate students with assistance of a faculty advisor, gave birth to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The three liberal arts students were Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper and Frank Coleman. Professor Ernest E. Just (Native of Charleston S.C.) was the faculty advisor. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning “friendship is essential to the soul,” the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. The phrase was selected as the fraternity’s motto. Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift were adopted as cardinal principals. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is a non-profit community service organization.
Contribution to Mitchell ES:
Three years ago Mitchell Math and Science Elementary established a partnership with the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc/Mu Alpha Chapter. (Charleston S.C.) A major component of this program involves a “Bridge-Builder Program.” The goals of this program are as follows:
- To establish a mentor-ship between a member of Omega Psi Phi with a 5th grade boy. (The past two years Mu Alpha Chapter has chosen 7 or more boys from this group to attend a week long Fraternity sponsored Summer Camp in North Carolina. The Fraternity pays 100% of all camp fees for each boy)
- To encourage and support high academic achievement.
- To encourage and support positive and healthy social skills.
- The Brothers of Omega Psi Phi will also work with the school’s administration in any other area that will help achieve educational and social goals.
The other two components of this partnership will involve participation in a “Service Day”(to be assigned by the school) and participation in Mitchell’s annual Holiday Market during the holiday season.
